Cobre Panama opens its doors to regulatory authorities and the civil society

Panama, January 11, 2024 – Today, a technical inspection was carried out by the Intergovernmental Supervisory Commission, coordinated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI). For its part, Cobre Panama reiterated its commitment to transparency and collaboration with the authorities, civil society and the community, as evidenced by the logistical support provided.
Experts and technicians from Cobre Panama participated in the activity and showed the attendees the mechanisms implemented to carry out the arduous tasks of preservation and safe management of the ecological and environmental conditions, as well as the areas, infrastructure and facilities of the mine site.
The audit team consisted of more than 40 people, including ministers Jorge Rivera Staff and Milciades Concepción, and officials from the ministries of Commerce and Industry, Environment, Labor and Labor Development, Government, Public Security, the Office of the Attorney General of the Administration, the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) and the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt).
In addition, 11 representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Centro de Incidencia Ambiental (CIAM), Transparency International-Panama Chapter, Universidad de Panamá (UP), Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá (UTP), Sociedad Panameña de Ingenieros y Arquitectos (SPIA), traditional authorities of the Ngäbe Buglé region, and 14 journalists from 12 media outlets participated as observers.
During the visit, a thorough tour of all the areas and facilities requested by the attendees was conducted, highlighting the methods of application of environmental stability and asset integrity measures, which have been implemented based on Cobre Panama’s extensive experience and knowledge of the site. After ceasing operations, the company maintains its commitment to social and environmental sustainability.
Cobre Panama reaffirms its willingness to continue participating in the dialogue with all sectors of society on the appropriate steps and plans to be followed at the mine site, with a view to ensuring satisfactory results for Panama and for the investment made.
