Panama, January 15, 2025 – As announced by the Minister of Environment, Juan Carlos Navarro, the removal of ammonium nitrate stored at the Cobre Panama mine is scheduled to begin on Thursday, January 16. Austin Powder has informed that it will start transporting the white crystalline solid compound, commonly used in mining activities, since it will not be used due to the suspension of the mine’s operation.
Cobre Panama’s industrial safety team will oversee the application of the highest safety standards and legal regulations to mitigate any risk to the communities and the environment. All personnel involved in this operation have been properly trained.
Ammonium nitrate is used in mining operations for rock fragmentation activities by blasting. This material must be removed from the warehouse located in the Punta Rincón international port area. Austin Powder has all the pertinent permits granted by the national authorities to re-export this material.
Cobre Panama will inform the authorities and the community of all the details of this relocation and they will also be able to participate in the verification of the process. In this way the company reaffirms its commitment to transparency, sustainability and environmental protection.
