Cobre Panama reaches milestone of five million square meters hydroseeded

Panama, August 19, 2024 – Cobre Panama has been recognized by Profile Products Latin America for being the first company to reach the milestone of five million square meters of hydroseeding, followed by the Panama Canal, which has performed 2.5 million square meters of hydroseeding.

In compliance with the Category III Environmental Impact Study, this achievement was executed by a team made up of 100% Panamanian personnel and reaffirms Cobre Panama’s commitment to sustainability by implementing an effective technique that creates a natural barrier to control erosion and protect water resources, positioning the company as a global benchmark in hydroseeding in Latin America.

Hydroseeding has been implemented in Cobre Panama for more than 15 years, standing out as an innovative technology for grass seeding. This method uses a mixture of water, seeds, fertilizers and hydraulic mulch, which are combined in specialized equipment and applied from a tower or hose.

It is important to mention that Cobre Panama has maintained a firm focus on environmental protection since the beginning of the mine’s construction, with more than five million square meters planted with hydroseeding, which is equivalent to more than five hundred hectares. This represents five times more area planted with hydroseeding than was used along the Panama-Colón highway during its construction.

In addition to being highly productive and safe, hydroseeding is 100% biodegradable, with minimal environmental impact. Its effectiveness is highlighted by the fact that it does not require extensive preparation of slopes, as long as they are mechanically stable, offering immediate protection against erosion caused by wind and water. This method, crucial for surface runoff management, is an essential tool for preventing water pollution, soil and habitat loss, as well as protecting human property.

Profile Products Latin America has been working with Cobre Panama since the beginning of the project, providing training to the environmental division in key areas such as machine operation, soil testing, seed selection and soil amendments, as well as erosion control solutions, applications and inspection, to ensure that the vegetation is established in a sustainable manner over the long term.

The recognition awarded by Profile Products Latin America not only highlights the work of Cobre Panama, but also sets a precedent for other sectors such as infrastructure, transportation and energy, demonstrating that sustainability and innovation can coexist in large-scale projects.
