– Training workshop held for heads of the operational section, biodiversity and heads of protected areas of the National Protected Areas System
Penonomé, June 21, 2023 – As part of the commitments established in the Category III Environmental Impact Study and the concrete actions carried out by Cobre Panama to contribute to the protection of the environment and the conservation of biodiversity throughout the country, a workshop was held for the heads of Protected Areas of the National System of Protected Areas.
During three days, the heads of the operational sections of protected areas and biodiversity and the heads of protected areas reinforced and updated their knowledge on topics such as threat detention, advances in control systems, surveillance, security, legal aspects, public use and biodiversity. At the same time, a general review of the general status of all protected areas nationwide was conducted.
Jonatan Montenegro, Environmental Advisor for Cobre Panama, provided information on the “Forrest Watcher” Program and how it is possible to stop threats and manage work in protected areas using geospatial applications.
Blanca Araúz, Environmental Superintendent of Cobre Panamá, gave a presentation on conservation measures for the restoration of biodiversity.
Francisco Solis, Environmental Superintendent of Cobre Panama, adds “this support that we are providing as Cobre Panama is of high value for the conservation of the country’s natural heritage, meetings of this type allow us to unify the criteria of all the provinces of the country”.
This workshop is part of the environmental compensation measures in the area of influence of the mine development, which comprises 5,900 hectares, out of a total of 13,600 hectares of concession. The protected areas that are part of the compensation are the Donoso and Omar Torrijos Herrera Managed Resources Area, Santa Fe National Park, and Omar Torrijos Herrera National Park, which together cover a protected area of 216,944 hectares, more than 36 times the area of the Cobre Panama mine development.
