This visit laid the groundwork for future mining collaboration opportunities between Chile and Panama.
Chile is the world’s largest copper producer.
Panama, July 24, 2023 – As part of the visit of the ProChile Antofagasta trade mission to Panama, made up of representatives of 13 companies and aimed at strengthening trade ties, the delegation had the opportunity to tour Cobre Panama, where they appreciated first-hand the high-level performance in the operation of this mine, the first world-class mine in Panama.
During the visit, the members of the delegation were able to learn about the administrative and operational processes, as well as the milling process carried out at the mine, which does not use cyanide or mercury to separate the ore, since a physical flotation process is applied to extract the copper concentrate, which consists of taking advantage of the hydrophobic properties of the ore.
They were also able to see the efficiency of the power plant and its low emissions, which are monitored in real time to ensure optimal operation.
The delegation also visited the nursery where the country’s only forestry seed bank is located and tasted a cup of “La Ceiba” coffee, a coffee produced by the Agro-Extensionism Program, as well as a sample of the more than 20 agricultural products marketed by the DONLAP Producers’ Association, a group formed as a result of Cobre Panama’s Community Development Programs.
Visitors took away a clear vision of Cobre Panama’s highly efficient operation and commitment to sustainability, strengthened business ties and laid the groundwork for future initiatives between Chile and Panama.
The city of Antofagasta is dedicated to mining production for export, which is developed by large private companies and one state-owned company, with advanced technology and high levels of productivity.
Chile is the world’s leading copper producer and is currently promoting Green Mining, through the implementation of strategies that guarantee an environmentally and community responsible mining process.
