– More than 75,000 students have benefited from the Integral Schools Program in 15 years
Panama, July 13, 2023 – As part of the commitment of Cobre Panama’s Integral Schools Program, executed by the Foundation for Integrated Sustainable Development (FUDIS), a weight and height monitoring day was held for approximately 5,000 students from 70 schools in the provinces of Coclé and Colón.
Jaime Torrero, coordinator of Cobre Panama’s education programs, indicated that “the purpose of this weight and height census in these 70 educational centers is to measure the development of the students each year and maintain a database in collaboration with MEDUCA in order to analyze the benefits of the program”.
This process also makes it possible to maintain a baseline on the population of students with special abilities, as well as to keep a record of student dropouts in these areas.
The Integral Schools program has been implemented for 15 years and aims to promote sustainability practices in 70 schools in the districts of Donoso, Omar Torrijos Herrera, Penonomé and La Pintada, which are neighboring areas to the copper mine, in order to provide equal opportunities for all. The schools benefit from school gardens, poultry production, road safety education, sports and social skills, environmental education and entrepreneurship workshops, and risk and disaster management, benefiting more than 75,000 students.
