– 11 farms in Coclé are already certified as Agrotourism Farms
Panama, August 10, 2023 – With the support of Cobre Panama, the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) held a training session entitled “Good agricultural practices and adaptation to climate change”, aimed at owners of agrotourism farms in the provinces of West Panama, Cocle, Herrera and Veraguas. This training is part of the National Agrotourism Program.
According to Yarisel Acevedo, National Coordinator of MIDA’s Agrotourism Program, “thanks to the support of Cobre Panama, it is possible to carry out these training sessions that benefit agricultural producers, who add value to their farms, improve their production and generate income through tourism”.
Miguel Jaén, from Cobre Panamá, emphasized that “supporting this training initiative is part of Cobre Panamá’s Socioeconomic Development Program. It is a way to boost agricultural enterprises by promoting technical knowledge and generating these spaces for the exchange of experiences among producers, so that they can improve their production and make it sustainable”.
During the training day, technical personnel from MIDA, agrotourism specialists and technical personnel from Cobre Panama gave talks on organic fertilizer production, pesticide management, and natural resource protection, among other topics.
Bervinca de Morcillo, from the Manantial de Antón Agrotourism Farm, was very pleased with the training and said that “the technical advice we have received today has been very complete, but the most important thing has been to learn about the correct management of natural resources”.
It is important to note that in the province of Cocle there is a boom in agrotourism farms. Yanaira Barrios, Coordinator of Agrotourism of MIDA in the province of Cocle, said that “there are currently 45 farms registered in the Agrotourism Program, 11 of them are already certified”.
Among the objectives was also to approach the authorities of MIDA, so that similar activities can be replicated in the agrotourism farms being promoted by Cobre Panama in Coclesito, in the province of Colon.
