Mining company donates vehicles for biodiversity protection in Panama
Panama, July 3, 2023 – In compliance with its commitments established in the Category III Environmental Impact Study and in order to continue contributing to the protection of the environment and the conservation of biodiversity in the country, Cobre Panama donated and made the formal transfer to the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) of a fully equipped 4X4 pickup truck, 6 rented 4×4 pickup trucks with maintenance service, insurance and fuel consumption included, 3 four wheels vehicles and 1 motorcycle for conservation activities, operations and patrols in the Omar Torrijos National Park, Santa Fe National Park and the Donoso Managed Resources Area.
This action is part of the compensation measures in the mine’s development area, which comprises 5,900 hectares out of a total of 13,000 hectares of concession. The delivery of these vehicles is a sign of Cobre Panama’s commitment to preserve biodiversity, recover populations of vulnerable species and avoid the destruction of forest areas. Since 2022 to date, Cobre Panama has delivered 11 vehicles to MiAmbiente for more than $200,000. The company will soon deliver 11 additional vehicles to continue strengthening the protection of these national parks.
Alejandro Chambi Buscaglia, Cobre Panama’s Environmental Manager, indicated that “the contribution we are making to MiAmbiente is a boost to improve the monitoring and control of protected areas. At Cobre Panama we have been working hard for more than 10 years to preserve biological diversity and this contribution is another example of our commitment to protect the environment and support the government in its conservation efforts”.
The mining company’s commitment to environmental protection is evidenced in concrete actions. Cobre Panama has been developing an intense and comprehensive Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) approved as part of the compensation commitments in the Environmental Impact Study, through which it has invested more than B/. 53 million in programs that include the protection, conservation, management and scientific research of important species of flora and fauna such as frogs and amphibians, sea turtles, the harpy eagle, mammals and big cats, as well as the implementation of sustainable environmental practices in its operations and the promotion of environmental education programs for nearby communities.
In addition, a letter of understanding with MiAmbiente was renewed in 2022, which establishes that Cobre Panama will finance the conservation and sustainable management of biological diversity in the Omar Torrijos, Santa Fe and Donoso national parks.
