Promoting health in local communities
The goal of our health and wellness programme in Zambia is to support the provision of high quality health promotions services to workers and surrounding communities in order to improve their well-being and productivity in Solwezi and Kalumbila Districts of North Western Province.
Our programme has four key objectives
- To anticipate potential health impacts associated with company activities and implement commensurate mitigation or enhance measures coupled with effective monitoring and evaluation to assure effectiveness.
- To anticipate and manage prevailing or emerging public health risks that have the potential to impact on company activities from a worker health and wellbeing, as well as business continuity and productivity perspective.
- To enable or enhance FQM socio-economic investment activities through linkage with the Corporate Social Responsibility department to maintain ‘social licence to operate’ within our host communities.
- To support health systems strengthening (HSS) activities that enables public health care service delivery and the effective implementation of Ministry of Health strategies and programs.
We have supported health services to deliver training, improve infrastructure, promote good behaviours and support maternity, child health and nutrition. This includes to increase awareness and prevention of malaria, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, HIV, Tuberculosis , as well as promoting testing and linking community members with care and treatment.
Our child and adolescent support programme focuses on schools in the catchment area and vulnerable groups, helping to support menstrual hygiene, health screening, sanitation inspections, capacity building for teachers and teaching children the basic skills they need to understand more about keeping themselves healthy.
WASH
We’ve helped communities and schools to increase awareness of water, sanitation and hygiene practices. This includes supporting access to and improving water and sanitation services, as well as supporting water quality testing and communication as well as helping local communities to manage waste and become more prepared for specific outbreaks.
