Panamanian mining industry’s work highlighted at PDAC 2024 convention

At the prestigious Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2024 Convention, Lilmarie Langmaid, Legal Superintendent of Cobre Panama, was recognized with the 2023-2024 Woman of Gold Award for “Woman in Mining Central America”.

Langamaid was one of two Panamanian women honored at the ceremony and this recognition highlights her valuable contribution to the regional mining industry, highlighting her leadership in a sector crucial to economic and sustainable development. Her involvement from the early stages of the Cobre Panama project not only reinforces her long-term commitment to the industry, but also demonstrates her strategic vision and ability to lead key mining initiatives. She is one example of the 1,000 women who were part of Cobre Panama’s workforce.

“It is an honor to be recognized for my work in the mining industry, especially in these uncertain times for mining in Panama. I thank Cobre Panama for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of the industry in our country,” said Langmaid during the award ceremony.

Another Panamanian recognized was Stellamaris Tile, who was part of Cobre Panama until 2013 and also contributed significantly to the project.

In the context of Women’s Month, this recognition takes on an even deeper meaning by highlighting the fundamental role of women in all aspects of society.

During the ceremony, which also recognized the work of women miners from Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, it was emphasized that the participation of women not only drives innovation and efficiency in the industry, but also promotes gender equity and social progress in mining communities.

The PDAC 2024 Convention, recognized as the leading voice of the global mineral exploration and development community, has more than 7,000 members worldwide. Its mission is focused on supporting a competitive, responsible and sustainable mining sector, fostering innovation, safety and environmental respect.
