At Cobre Panama we have always respected Panamanian laws, operating with transparency and responsibility.
The request to the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (MITRADEL) to suspend more than 7,000 labor contracts was due to the illegal blockades of small vessels at the port of Punta Rincón, which prevented the arrival of supplies, forcing the stoppage of production work.
In this regard, Cobre Panama requests MITRADEL:
A quick pronouncement to address the uncertainty that our workforce and their families are experiencing due to the lack of response from the authorities.
The establishment of responsible plans to address the employment stability of those employees that the company will not be able to retain due to recent events.
In relation to the ruling issued by the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), which declares the unconstitutionality of Law 406 of October 20, 2023, it is important to clarify that until there is a roadmap clearly established by the Government, it will not be possible to determine how many employees will be able to continue working in the company in conservation and maintenance tasks (non-operational), a key factor to avoid future environmental disasters.
We at Cobre Panama reiterate our willingness to engage in an open and constructive dialogue to address these and other concerns.
